emporal and Contextual Meaning of the Arabic Form "Yafʿalu" A Descriptive and Analytical Study

Abstract

This study examines the temporal and contextual meanings of the Arabic form “yaf`alu” in order  to identify its functions in expressing the past, present, future, and general time. It aims to clarify the role of linguistic, contextual, and situational clues in determining the tense conveyed by this form, while distinguishing tense from aspect, such as continuity, repetition, and probability. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and uses inductive procedures to collect and classify examples from the Qur’ān, .Arabic poetry, and standard Arabic The study concludes that “yaf`alu” does not determine tense independently; rather, its meaning results from the interaction between its morphological structure, accompanying particles, and context, and it may simultaneously convey both temporal and aspectual meanings. The analysis shows that “lam” negates a past event, “lammā” negates an event up to the present while leaving open its future occurrence, “idh” combines past time with narrative vividness, and “kāna” adds continuity or habituality to past reference. It further demonstrates that particles such as “qad,” “law,” “rubamā,” and “hal” do not impose a single tense in all contexts; instead, the temporal interpretation depends on the surrounding clues and discourse context.
