Abstract

This study examines the preventive and therapeutic roles of social work in reducing contemporary family problems in light of the rapid social, economic, and cultural changes affecting family stability and cohesion. The study aims to identify the nature and causes of some contemporary family problems, determine the preventive and therapeutic roles of social work in addressing them, identify the main professional methods used in working with families, and examine the major obstacles that may limit the effectiveness of professional practice in this field. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach and employed content analysis to examine relevant literature, studies, and sources related to the research topic, thereby analyzing the dimensions of family problems and identifying professional approaches for addressing them. The findings indicated that social work plays an important role in addressing family problems by raising community awareness of appropriate ways of dealing with them and providing professional interventions through an integrated process that begins with assessment and diagnosis, followed by intervention and treatment, and concludes with evaluation and follow-up. The findings also highlighted the importance of the preventive role of social work through the early identification of the causes of family problems and efforts to reduce their potential risks before they escalate. The study recommends allocating adequate financial resources for family social work programs, establishing a binding professional code of ethics for working with families, developing continuous training programs for social workers, and providing regular professional supervision. It also recommends strengthening family counseling programs before and after marriage and establishing specialized counseling centers to support families and help them address their problems.
